Koch spits Hertha into the soup

Hertha BSC missed the leap to second place in the table with the 300th draw in their Bundesliga history. The hosts had to be content at home against SC Freiburg despite playful superiority with a 1:1 (1:1). In the fourth home game of the season, coach Pal Dardai’s team lost points for the first time.

Ondrej Duda (7th) had put Hertha in the lead with his sixth goal of the season. Robin Koch (36th), however, managed a flattering equaliser for Freiburg, who lost only one of their last six games.

Hertha were plagued by injury worries in the defence. In Jordan Torunarigha, Karim Rekik and Niklas Stark, three central defenders were eliminated. Fabian Lustenberger and Derrick Luckassen, who had only been allowed three minutes of Bundesliga time before, formed the unusual duo in the defence centre.

However, Hertha’s defence was hardly subjected to any stress test, almost only the host played. With its first chance the citizens of Berlin went by Duda also in guidance, which gave them still more self-confidence in the actions. Hertha skilfully ran the ball and the opponents and had a good chance of scoring more goals. But the conspicuous Salomon Kalou (28.), Duda (29.) and Valentino Lazaro (33.) lost 2-0.

In front of 53,716 spectators, the Freiburgers were almost always one step too late and much too predictable in the game structure. All the more surprising was the equalizer with Koch’s long-range shot, which was deflected by Hertha’s midfielder Arne Maier. After that, the Breisgau players became more courageous and the Berliners lost their rhythm a bit.

In the second half, SC coach Christian Streich brought national team player Nils Petersen, but only the home side exerted pressure again. But Duda and Co. did not act as determined as they did at the beginning of the game. Opportunities like Vedad Ibisevic’s (61st) and Kalou’s (70th) were in short supply.

The Freiburg defensive was also much safer and won more duels. The Breisgauer team, however, hardly made it to the front, the few chances for a counterattack were played badly by Freiburg. In the 84th minute, goalkeeper Rune Jarstein prevented Gian-Luca Waldschmidt from a possible home defeat of the capital city.

Shortly thereafter, referee Benjamin Cortus, on the other hand, denied the hosts a penalty, according to the video images, which the hosts had demanded after a supposed foul by Manuel Gulde on coach’s son Palko Dardai. First the referee had pointed to the point, before he apparently reversed his decision after a hint from the video cellar in Cologne. Check out mFortune for more promotions and bonuses!
