With refreshing offensive football and a triple pack from Jonas Hofmann, Borussia Mönchengladbach have for the first time in four years again conquered second place in the Bundesliga. The Gladbach team also won their fourth home game 4:0 (1:0) against FSV Mainz 05 and took second place with 17 points behind Borussia Dortmund. Hofmann (21./53./63.) and Thorgan Hazard (58.) scored the goals in front of 51 123 spectators at Borussia-Park for the Borussians, who have now been undefeated nine times in a row at home. The Mainz team, who have now been without a win for five games, have also been without a goal for 450 minutes.
Gladbach started the game with only one change after their success against Bayern. In the central defensive midfield, Tobias Strobl again took over the organisation for Christoph Kramer, so Borussia had also played the first four games. At the Rheinhessen, Florian Müller returned to the goal after adductor problems and Daniel Brosinski played on the right defender position.
The hosts could have taken the lead right from the start, but after a Hofmann corner, Alassane Plea did not hit the ball properly from close range and missed the chance, as did Lars Stindl, who was narrowly mistaken from twelve metres later.
The Mainz team, well organised in the defensive and in the build-up, also showed offensively better approaches than their poor yield of four goals would have suggested. Jean-Philippe Mateta, however, did not make use of Nico Elvedi’s blatant miss after eight minutes and pushed the ball past the goal. A header from Jonathan Burkardt was safely intercepted by Borussia keeper Yann Sommer (14).
The most beautiful Gladbach attack so far then led to a 1-0 win. A pass from Stindl used Hazard for a pass into the depths to Hofmann, who then struck with a shot from half-break position. The former Mainzer then had eight minutes later bad luck with a Schlenzer, which goalkeeper Müller could parry spectacularly. In the 53rd minute it was again Stindl who put Hazard in the limelight and Hofmann could use his pass from close range to 2-0.
In spite of the always dangerous offensive actions of the hosts, the Mainzers looked for their chances and challenged the Borussia defense and goalkeeper Sommer again and again. But the goalless series of the Rheinhessen now lasts five games. Planet Fruity Casino has a galaxy of games of different categories.
In the end, the Gladbachers’ powerful offensive prevailed. Hazard scored after Plea’s pass to 3-0, and Hofmann scored his third goal to put an end to the match. The Gladbachers scored at least one goal in the 14th game in a row – the club’s longest goal series in 27 years.
